A group of young people from Mitchells Plain got together in a bid to spread awareness ahead of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children.
Poet Chelsea Goliath, 22, from Portlands was approached by four members of Omunye Productions in Tafelsig to start an awareness campaign using her material.
The team consists of brothers Dale and Shane Sylvester, Darren Francis and Ricardo Cotton.
Chelsea explains: “This poem has always been something I wanted to share with people. The poem came about during the time of murder and abuse of women in Women’s Month in August.
“At the time I wrote it I was very emotional and irritated with what we were going through as women with regards to gender-based violence.
“I want this poem to be a reminder of the hype we made during that time.
“I might not be able to change the world, but we can all try to do something and that change starts at home. Everyone should start fighting back.”
The group launched their two-minute public announcement video on Thursday night and mense can access it on Facebook and Instagram under Omunye Productions.
The video is called Fight Back and Darren says: “We hooked up with Chelsea and as budding photographers having a passion for our community, we had to get involved with her because of her poetry. We just knew we had to do something.“We used our own money to get this shoot together and didn’t have any sponsors.
“We want to show people that there is more to life than gangsterism and violence, we want to show that ordinary people can do extraordinary things in our communities.”
