The Cape Flats’ favourite son Loukmaan Adams is back home at the Baxter Theatre next month, to star in From Satin to Sequins, which is back by public demand.
The popular show, with their slogan “More than a Minstrel” returns for a three-week run and the busy actor says he can’t wait “to go back to his roots”.
Loukman replaces Carlo Daniels as the lead, who played the role of Carl Denver Biggs, the son of minstrel troupe owner Mr Biggs.
The show comes complete with brand-new songs, as well as some of your favourite classics.
Ayesha Abrahams from producers, Oddball Concepts, says: “In the first version, it was about a boy living with his single mother, who wanted to change the way the minstrel troupes operate.
“He had big ideas for how this could be done. We see Mr. Biggs’ son, played by Loukmaan, and what life is like as he carries on this legacy of his father and his troupe, The Woodstock Darlings.
“We also see how ‘normal’ minstrels are opposed to the negative stereotype usually associated with the minstrel culture.”
Loukmaan, who last week returned from Australia, where he performed in several shows, says he’s already begun rehearsals for the show.
KLOPSE STORIE: On for three weeks
“Satin to Sequins has evolved into a beautiful showcase and I think it’s time Cape Town recognises these traditions and how important the culture is to South Africa, especially now that we’ve had this experience in Australia.”
He referred to the “horrible” experience he, Alistair Izobell and Devanish Hendricks had Down Under, when they were told by a representative of SA Tourism to get off the stage as the music they were performing was not “black enough”.
“It made me realise that we should embrace our culture and not be ashamed of it. I grew up with this culture,” says Loukmaan.
“Doing this role takes me back to a time when I enjoyed watching these colourful streets from Malay choirs to klopse.
“It brings out something joyous, seeing how the ordinary guy that sweeps the streets stands next to a lawyer, an accountant and bricklayer and they’re hitting drums and jingles.
“It’s a beautiful thing and not the gangsterism people make it out to be. A lot of work and planning goes into it.”
Other cast members are Carmen Maarman, who play Mrs Ivy Biggs, as well as Austin Rose, Tashreeq de Villiers, Shadley Schroeder, Ashtevahnn Mintoor and Junaid Isaacs.
Allister Izobell cracks the whip as director.
Satin to Sequins runs from 6-24 November 2018.
Tickets are R135 to R150 via Webtickets and selected Pick n Pay stores.
