Funny man Chris Tucker is on a successful world comedy tour for which he’s been receiving rave reviews.
But the comedian made time for an exclusive chat with the Daily Voice on the eve of Women’s Day.
The first thing you notice about the American comedian is his distinctive voice. Chris, 46, says when he phones people, they mistake him for a woman and even refer to him as “ma’m”.
“Oh, my word, I really got a lot of problems with my voice. When I go to any drive-through to order something to eat, they would think that I am a woman. They would always ask me, ‘Ma’m do you need anything else?’ I just keep thinking ‘I am a man, dammit, a man!’”
But the joke’s on them when he collects his order. “Then they go crazy and apologise and I always reprimand them to pay a bit more attention.”
When asked who is hot in comedy right now, the Rush Hour actor reckons Kevin Hart and Trevor Noah have some serious funny bones.
“You guys got Trevor Noah and he is from South Africa. That guy is very hot when it comes to comedy.”
Admitting he’d “love to be on [The Daily Show], Chris adds: “The opportunity has never presented itself. I think I should make it happen.”
There’s just one minor hurdle. “You know, I actually have never met Trevor.”
What can the audience expect in his show? “I am talking about my life. My journey in the industry,” he reveals.
“I talk a bit about the #metoo movement.”
“Women must celebrate being women, because without women, there would be no one in this world. Women really are the greatest and the best. Celebrate your inner beauty and joy of being a woman.
“My mother, grandmother and sisters’ love have guided me, moulded me and shaped me to be the man I am today. A woman’s strength and love is really very important, so celebrate Women’s Month, South Africa.”
Chris Tucker: Live is at the Grand Arena, GrandWest on Wednesday, 7 November. Tickets, from R460, available from www.bigconcerts.co.za.
