The South African Football Association (Safa) yesterday sacked Bafana Bafana coach Molefi Ntseki.
Following his failure to qualify for next year’s African Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon after a 2-0 defeat to Sudan on Sunday, Safa didn’t even do the moeite to chat to Ntseki before announcing his axing to the media.
In a press conference led by Safa CEO Tebogo Motlanthe in the absence of president Danny Jordaan, the official said that there had been “no formal communication to the coach at the time”.
And for former Bafana assistant coach Roger de Sa, that lack of professionalism and vision from national football bosses is what is rotting Bafana.
He says: “When Italy failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, the head coach resigned immediately.
“And then the president of the federation resigned the following day, because he took the blame.
“Here in SA, the same guys run the show and we just accept that.
“We need more ex-footballers in decision-making roles.”
De Sa was part of the coaching setup the last time Bafana qualified for a World Cup – in 2002.
Ahead of the kickoff of SA’s campaign to get to Qatar 2022 next month, the Cape United chairman says that ex-Bafana boss Pitso Mosimane is his pick to take the reins.
However, with many tipping Cape legend Benni McCarthy for the job, he warns that his former teammate may not be ready for such a big job.
De Sa says: “Benni is definitely a candidate. But he needs experience of coaching in continental football before I feel he is ready.
“International football is different from club football, especially in Africa.”
