Stuart Baxter defended his tactics after his Bafana Bafana team failed to take their chance to take control of their Afcon qualifying pool.
Taking on Group E leaders Libya, a win in Durban would have taken them three points clear of their rivals, which includes Nigeria.
But on a pitch heavy with rain, Baxter set his team up to play carpet football in the 0-0 draw.
The conditions weren’t conducive to their passing game and by the time the former Kaizer Chiefs mentor brought on aerial threat Bradley Grobler up front, most of the impetus from his team had evaporated.
But Baxter insists his Bafana side are better at playing their possession game.
The Englishman explains: “I thought it was a very good game of football. It was a good advert for African football. But we weren’t really true to ourselves in the second half.
“We changed it because we had three central midfielders in the first half.
“Neither of them were really getting up alongside Percy [Tau].
“So even though we penetrated down the flanks, we didn’t have enough bodies in the box.
“So, in the second half I decided to bring Bradley on to attack the crosses better and put Vila [Sibusiso Vilakazi] in the 10 and Percy on the flank.”
Veteran midfielder Dean Furman believes the team lacked creativity and tempo in their attack.
He says: “To draw against a team who put everyone behind the ball. We knew exactly that’s how they were going to play.
“For us, the challenge today was to break that down. “Unfortunately, we didn’t do enough in the final third today. We really didn’t cause them problems from behind.”
