Jose Mourinho condemned his Manchester United squad, saying they are not world class after they were beaten 1-0 by Juventus at home on Tuesday night.
Former Red Devils hero Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford as the Italians controlled the match and United struggled to impose themselves in front of their own fans.
United lost their first Group H match thanks to a 17th-minute Paulo Dybala goal but remain second on four points, five behind Juve, and two ahead of Valencia.
But the gulf in quality was there for all to see, as Jose’s team struggled to threaten Ronaldo and company.
And after already spending £400m on players like Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof, Jose says it’s not enough.
He says: “They had Gonzalo Higuaí*, Mario Mandzukic, Dybala and want more. They want Cristiano Ronaldo.”
Asked if this was the kind of investment United required, Mourinho said: “To go to the Juventus level? Barcelona level? Real Madrid level? Manchester City level? How can you reach this level? Yes [by buying the best players].
“It is not easy because many of the players - they belong to these top teams. So we work with what we have and we try to improve with what we have.”
