Luvo Manyonga has been banned for four years after failing to meet “whereabouts” criteria, the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) announced on Friday.
It is the South African’s second violation of the anti-doping rules, with his ban backdated to 23 December 2020 when he was provisionally supended.
Manyonga, who was previously banned for 18 months over the presence of crystal meth (tik) in a sample, was charged with an anti-doping rule violation for missing a test on November 26, 2019.
The 30-year-old was then also too imprecise on location details for two other tests in April 2020 and again in October last year.
Athletes must let authorities know their intended whereabouts to allow anti-doping officials to find them.
World Athletics rules define any combination of three missed tests and/or filing failures within a 12-month period as an anti-doping rule violation.
Manyonga has 30 days to appeal.
In better news for Team SA, Wayde van Niekerk has qualifed for the Tokyo Games after producing a qualifying time of 44.56 seconds at a World Athletics event in Madrid on Saturday.
There was no such luck for Caster Semenya, who is chasing qualification in the 5 000m. Needing a time of 15:10 in an event in Germany, she finished fourth in a time of 15:57.12.
