Proteas legend and SuperSport commentator Fanie de Villiers has revealed that he instructed their cameramen to look for any foul play as Australia got the ball to reverse before the 30th over on Saturday in the Newlands Test against South Africa.
As a result, Australia captain Steve Smith has been banned for the rest of the series and is expecting further punishment from Cricket Australia after pleading guilty to ball tampering.
Cameron Bancroft, the player caught in the act on camera, also got three demerit points.
Vinnige Fanie, though, tells a radio station: “I said earlier on that if they could get reverse swing in the 26th, 27th, 28th over, then they are doing something different.
“We actually said to our cameramen, ‘go out have a look, boys. They’re using something’.
“They searched for an hour and a half until they saw something and then they started following Bancroft and they actually caught him out at the end.”
With sponsors and fans unhappy about the act, Cricket Australia’s top guns are currently in South Africa to investigate Smith and the Aussie team.
It has been rumoured that grootbek vice captain Dave Warner might also miss the final Test at the Wanderers.
