The Proteas are paaping over the fitness of captain Faf du Plessis ahead Wednesday’s fourth ODI against Sri Lanka.
With the series already in the bag after South Africa won the first three matches, Faf suffered a blow to his shoulder in Sunday’s third encounter which the tourists won by 78 runs.
And while they will monitor the skipper in training, Du Plessis reveals that he might sit out the next game anyway.
He says: “Even before this series we said, no matter the result, it’s about giving guys opportunity.
“And we will try and do the same in the next two games as well.”
One player who might benefit from Du Plessis’ shoulder injury is Aiden Markram.
The Titans man was dropped for the third ODI in favour of Reeza Hendricks, who then went on to score a century on debut to win the match for the South Africans.
As far as the captaincy goes, if Du Plessis misses out, coach Ottis Gibson can always fall back on former skipper Hashim Amla.
Other options include in-form Cape Cobras allrounder JP Duminy or even Markram, who is being touted as a future national team leader.
