Hashim Amla is back in the runs ahead of the World Cup.
And the Proteas opener says that the mental focus he has rediscovered in the current holy month of Ramadaan will help him to give South Africa a fast start in their Group Stage opener against hosts England on Thursday.
There was widespread concern over whether the 35-year-old deserved a place in the squad after months of struggling for form.
But after back-to-back fifties in warm-ups at the weekend, Hash looks back to his best.
Asked about how Ramadaan effects him, the devout Muslim says: “It really helps my conditioning. Fasting is something I look forward to - it’s probably the best of the months for me.
“Whenever we play cricket during the time, you do feel hungry and thirsty. But for it’s a great mental and spiritual exercise.”
After scoring an unbeaten 51 off 46 balls in a rain-hit friendly with the West Indies on Sunday, he adds that that focus will play a huge role with wet English summers.
Hash explains: “In England, we are going to have this type of days where it’s probably stop-start. And as a batter, you need to get your mind around it and this was good preparation for that.”
