Cape Town City kept their cool to return to the MTN8 final.
Coach Benni McCarthy's team scored all their spot-kicks in their semifinal penalty shootout victory over Mamelodi Sundowns on Sunday.
But new Dutch goalkeeper Peter Leeuwenburgh proved to be the hero, denying the Brazilians twice.
City looked to take the game to their hosts in the hope of getting an early away goal as coach McCarthy made a number of attacking changes to the side – with Riyaad Norodien and Craig Martin in support of lone striker Matthew Rusike.
But it was the Brazilians who came out of the blocks with more purpose.
And they would get the goal they needed to wipe out City’s aggregate lead in the 25th minute.
After a City counter broke down on the right, Themba Zwane drove at the City defence and his fearsome shot was parried straight to Jose Ali Meza.
The Venezuelan’s cutback was pounced on by former Liverpool man Toni Silva, who scored his first goal in South African football.
On the backfoot, City were not going to be cowed and were nearly level in the 34th minute. Martin went on a great run and his left-foot strike was turned just around the post by Denis Onyango and Rusike had a shot block in the 38th minute.
City were still looking vulnerable on the counter, but as the intensity of the match was sapped away, a penalty shootout looked inevitable.
City will now face SuperSport United in the September 29 final.
