One of my favourite things to do when it’s festive season is try out new desserts.
Not because I’m trying to change tradition, but because new things can sometimes turn into a new tradition.
After all, how did the first traditions come into being?
What I usually do is take a simple recipe, a family treasure, and add my own flavour to it.
You never know what you can end up with.
If you are used to making a Peppermint Crisp fridge tart, this year make a Peppermint Volcano instead.
This year, a friend of mine is cooking for more than 200 underprivileged kids in her community.
The supper and gift giving will take place on Christmas Eve and, of course, there will be dessert as well.
In the spirit of giving, I will be assisting with puddings.
It’s always wonderful for me to see how selfless our people on the Cape Flats are, especially this time of the year.
Our communities are poor and need a hand, but I find it’s those who have very little themselves who are the most generous.
The Christmas pudding is the official cake of the festive season, but on the Cape Flats, a well-made trifle is the thing to serve.
We also have a Christmas fruitcake and a Christmas tree cake that will knock your socks off.
What is better than a delicious dessert? Second helpings, mos!
The next Cooksisters will be published on 8 January, so from us to you, may you have a blessed Christmas and a prosperous New Year.
