Like in all times of crisis, people express their fears, anxieties and trauma in different ways.
While social media is a good tool for people who are cut off from family, to stay in touch, it has also become a tool for people to spread dangerous information and beliefs that the Coronavirus is a hoax.
As a journalist, I am generally not one for conspiracy theories, but I remain cynical and sceptical enough to keep an open mind.
Here’s what’s most important: This virus is killing too many people on a daily basis for us to entertain these stories and be encouraged to ignore the warnings.
It is reckless and criminal for anyone with a fringe theory to encourage others to trust them at this moment.
If you are a contrarian, I urge you to please suspend your disbelief for the moment, and for the greater good.
You are risking your own culpability when it comes to the millions of gullible people out there who are easily taken in.
Personally, I will only open my mind to that kind of thinking once the threat is over and we have beaten this thing.
And I encourage you to do the same.
