An identity parade, consultation with the victim and a DNA report is still outstanding in the case of a man accused of sexually assaulting a five-year-old girl a YEAR ago.
The 49-year-old man, dubbed by residents as the “fidget rapist”, cannot be named until his identity parade is completed.
He made a brief appearance at the Mitchells Plain Regional Court on Monday.
The man was arrested in August last year and is known to the child and her family, who are from Rocklands.
It’s alleged he lured the child away from her home to a nearby bush at Kapteinsklip Train Station after promising to buy her a fidget spinner.
He allegedly raped the child twice before he was caught by a passer-by who scared him off and flagged down Law Enforcement officers.
The girl was taken to a police station where she managed to identify her attacker before she was taken back home to her shocked family.
on Monday, the court heard the identity parade had not yet taken place and nor had the State prosecutor consulted with the little girl.
The prosecutor also told the court they were awaiting the DNA report.
The child’s ouma was called before the court where the magistrate explained the delay.
She was also warned that the minor would need to be at court for the suspect’s next appearance.
According to a source the identity parade has been postponed several times as police have been unable to find men with a similar description to the suspect.
The matter has been set for 26 September for a final postponement.
