The Western Cape’s top cop is set to meet with Bonteheuwel residents to tackle their crime
concerns following two shutdowns in the Bishop Lavis police precinct.
Hundreds of gatvol residents in Bonteheuwel and Bishop Lavis took to the streets earlier this month, saying they are moeg of gang shootings and demanded police step up to the plate.
While hundreds of people attended the protests, a group of only 50 people showed up at a meeting called by the organisers on Wednesday night.
Visible police commander, Colonel Sakhiwo Tekule, told the group that provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Khombinkosi Jula, will host a meeting next week to discuss their concerns.
“He is coming to address the community on the demands made in the memorandum,” Tekule says.
But march organiser, Henriette Abrahams, said they were not interested as the community was tired of empty promises.
“It is an insult to what we are experiencing in Bonteheuwel. For everything to be escalated to PC is not good enough,” she says.
“I am not even looking forward to meeting Jula because Jula is going to come here and say he has escalated it to national.
“I don’t think government is taking us seriously. You want us to die first.”
