A friend of alleged child killer Melvin Volkwyn claims the detective in the Orderick Lucas case tried to coerce him during the investigation.
Jonathan Alexander returned to the Western Cape High Court yesterday for cross-examination following his explosive testimony on Wednesday when he labelled Orderick’s mom Davedine Lucas a “jintoe” and said she broke her son’s arm herself, and not Volkwyn as she had claimed.
Responding to questions, Alexander explained at the time of Orderick’s disappearance he, too, was arrested for kidnapping but after the prosecutors realised they did not have a case against him, he was released from the Blue Down Magistrates’ Court.
He said on the Monday morning after Davedine was assaulted by an angry mob for allegedly stealing a cellphone, he accompanied Volkwyn and another woman to the day hospital to find Davedine as he had heard she was making a criminal case against him for the assault.
Alexander said while he admits that he told the group where to find her, he did not assault Davedine and was worried about cops getting involved.
“They told her that [I] told them where to find her. Daai polisiestasie by ons is baie corrupt. Hulle vat gou valse sake aan. Ek bly al jare daar, ek weet waarvan ek praat,” he testified.
The flamboyant man fingered the investigating officer, a Warrant Officer Van Wyk, claiming he tried to coerce him while he gave his statement.
“Hy was baie snaaks met my gewees,” Alexander said.
“When he came to fetch me to go to the police station, he said I’m not playing the game, and I asked what game are we playing?
“Ek was bang gewees, but ek het nie geweet wat gaan vir wat nie.”
State prosecutor Mornay Julius accused Alexander of intentionally coming to court to bad-mouth Davedine.
“You called her a jintoe. That is a very ugly derogatory word to use on any woman. Why would her sex life be relevant?
“You also testified that you looked after the twins when she went to do her stuff [prostitution]. So you encouraged it?”
Alexander vehemently denied that he encouraged Davedine’s alleged sex work and said she had often lied to him about where she was going.
“Ek het agterna uitgevind (wat sy doen). Ek vra verskoning vir die woord maar dit is vir my gevra en ek antwoord.”
The trial was postponed to 28 April.
Speaking outside court, Alexander told the Daily Voice that he was relieved to be done with his testimony and insisted he had nothing against Davedine and “only spoke the truth”.
He also clarified that calling her a jintoe was not him criticising Davedine’s sex life but a reference to her alleged sex work: “Jintoe beteken dat jy gaan van man tot man maar in Afrikaans is dit mos prostitusie. Maar daar by ons coloured township gebruik hulle die woord jintoe.”
