Customers and workers at a busy petrol station in Strandfontein have been left in shock following an armed robbery.
The BP garage in Wavecrest Crescent was robbed on Tuesday at about 8.30pm.
The five skelms also took a customer’s car, a silver Golf 4 with the registration CAA 36011.
Management at BP confirmed CCTV footage of the incident has been handed over to police.
SAPS’ FC van Wyk says no arrests have been made yet.
“They demanded the staff and customers in the shop to lay down, suspects then took an undisclosed amount of cash and cigarettes. They also then demanded the car keys of one of the customers and fled the scene with the vehicle. No shots were fired [or] injuries sustained. A business robbery and theft of motor vehicle case was registered for investigation,” he says.
The Strandfontein CPF chairperson, Sandy Schuter, says crime is getting out of control in the once quiet community and is asking residents to be vigilant and to report suspicious behaviour to police.
Last Friday, robbers pretending to be customers robbed the OK Liquor Store nearby Bayview.
“Crime is out of control, our community [members] are sitting ducks, [and] we have only a handful of people who sacrifice time to be visible (as neighbourhood watch members).
“We cannot expect police patrol vans to be everywhere and then still to attend to complaints. We need to join hands.
“We encourage residents
to join the CPF safety structures. They can contact me on
071 947 8294.”
