A pregnant Mitchells Plain mom was rushed to hospital after she was wounded in a drive-by shooting which left the father of her children dead.
The incident happened on Saturday night, but she has since been discharged with a minor flesh wound.
Speaking to the Daily Voice yesterday, Bertha Robain, 27, says she went into shock watching her boyfriend Brandon Isaacs, 28, die after being shot at her family home in Eastridge.
The couple have been together for nine years and have a seven-year-old daughter, Zeeah.
They were expecting the birth of their son this week, but instead Bertha will now be burying the love of her life.
“We were all at home when the shooting happened,” she explains. “It was just before 7pm and still light outside.
“Brandon and I were running a take-aways business on weekends.
“Brandon worked as a repairman here in Eastridge where he grew up and helped clean gardens and stuff.
“We already have a daughter and we were preparing for the birth of our son, Zeek, who was supposed to be born on Sunday morning.
“At the time of the shooting, I was already 40 weeks pregnant and they were going to induce me the next day.”
Bertha says the family had gathered in the front yard while she and Brandon were making food to sell when the gunshots rang out.
According to witnesses, two gunmen in a VW Citi Golf jumped out and fired a hail of bullets in the street and towards the house and Brandon was hit.
“They didn’t even care about a pregnant woman standing there when they started shooting, we all had to run,” says Bertha.
“I was shot skrams [grazed] in the leg but went into shock when Brandon died and they rushed me to hospital.”
Police spokesperson, Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana, confirms the shooting and says Brandon was shot multiple times.
“Police detectives are pursuing the suspects with no arrests yet.”
The shooting has angered residents who say Brandon was not a gangster, this was confirmed by police sources.
Brandon will be laid to rest on Saturday and Bertha says she will have to give birth to their son without his comforting presence.
“The baby is bridged now so they booked me for a C-section but I have to wait until the funeral,” she says.
“I am very heartsore that they killed him like that because we all know he wasn’t a gangster and we don’t know why he was shot.
“He was a hardworking father and was excited to see his son.”
