Murder accused Corrine Jackson’s lawyer said they want her cellphone records as they could prove her innocence.
This was revealed on Wednesday at the Mitchells Plain Regional Court where Jackson appeared, looking cheerful while standing in the dock.
Jackson, who is currently out on R5 000 bail, was arrested last year and charged for the murder of her estranged girlfriend, Nadine Esterhuizen, 18.
The cellphone records are believed to relate to communication between Jackson and Nadine in the months and days before the September 2017 murder.
Jackson’s lawyer, Advocate Asghar Mia, told the court his client needed the information to help her defence.
“She has information on the phone which will be used for her defence,” said Mia.
But the State indicated they could not proceed with anything until the investigating detective was present to grant permission and consultation on the matter.
VICTIM: Nadine Esterhuizen, 18
The matter was postponed to 28 November for the detective to be present.
Jackson has yet to plead.
Outside court Nadine’s mother, Vanessa Esterhuizen, said all they want to know is why her daughter was killed.
“I asked her in court are you happy? She just smiled at me,” Vanessa said.
“Everyday I feel disappointed because she is walking the streets.
“I feel that if she can do this to my daughter, she can do this to someone else.”
It’s alleged Jackson planned the murder, stabbing Nadine 21 times at a Colorado Park residence. She allegedly also tried to cut Nadine’s head off.
Jackson claimed she acted in self- defence.
Nadine had a protection order and a case of assault against Jackson after she allegedly beat her at Strandfontein Pavilion, leaving her with a cracked skull.
