A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after an elderly woman was found murdered in her Manenberg home.
The gruesome discovery was made by her son, Maghdien Omar, on Sunday afternoon.
Ruwayda Omar, 75, lived alone and her family says she never allowed anyone in her Elsieskraal Street home.
Her niece Malieka Benjamin, 31, tells the Daily Voice: “It doesn’t seem like there was a break-in because nothing was taken from the house.”
The shocked woman says her parents had visited her aunt’s home earlier and they assumed she was not at home.
“Every Sunday my parents brought her food because she was alone in the house.
“When there was no answer, they left and then hours later we received a call from Ruwayda’s son.
“We are not sure if she had already been stabbed at the time my parents were there.”
Malieka says Maghdien called them to break the news of her aunt’s death.
“He lives in the backyard and he went inside to look for his mom. He found her deceased.
“He then informed everyone. When we arrived at the house we found the police investigating.”
The family stood outside the cordoned off area for more than five hours while the police combed the crime scene.
The victim’s brother Abduragmaan Omar, 64, says she was a religious woman.
“She was a well-known person in the community and she was loved by many.
“She was very helpful, whenever people had problems she would be there.”
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk says cops are investigating a murder case: “The 75-year woman’s body was found by her son yesterday at Elsieskraal Way in Manenberg.
“According to reports, the half-naked body was found at midday, with multiple stabbed wounds to her upper body.”
He adds that a 15-year-old has been arrested for the murder and will appear in the Athlone court once charged.
