Firefighters were called out to extinguish a fire on a train along Glencairn Railway Station in Simon’s Town on Monday.
The City’s Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson, Jermaine Carelse, says one of the motorised locomotives and two carriages were damaged.
“One motorised locomotive and two carriages were severely damaged and another carriage was slightly damaged by the fire,” he says.
“The fire was extinguished at 4.05pm. No further injuries were reported and the scene was handed over to Prasa.”
Metrorail reported that the train service line inbound and outbound Simon’s Town was affected.

Commuters were advised to make alternative transport means between Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town.
It is unclear at this stage what the cause of the fire was.
Metrorail’s spokesperson, Riana Scott, confirmed that train number 0182 which was en route from Simon’s Town to Cape Town had caught alight at Glencairn Train Station.
She said both police and fire and rescue teams would investigate the incident while services were terminated inbound and outbound.
She added the damages would be assessed by Prasa.
