Commuters travelling on the Metrorail express train on Monday evening were robbed by an armed gang.
The northern line has been the target of several train robberies over the past few months, with gunmen robbing mense and even throwing some commuters from moving trains.
Train 2581 from Cape Town en route to Kraaifontein was stormed by armed men between Parow and Tygerberg stations during the evening peak hour.
A passenger, who asked not to be named, says she has now had enough of Metrorail and their “sloppiness”’ in protecting its commuters.
“This is not the first time I have been a victim to a train robbery. Just in September alone there were five train robberies on the northern line and I was one of the victims of those train robberies,” she says.
The woman says there were no rail police or security guards in sight.
The Rail Enforcement Unit was launched in October to curb crime and vandalism on trains.
“These men jumped into the train with handguns, they were so many and acted so fast. Also, no one does anything because people are too afraid to get hurt as these heartless people have no remorse.
“Chains and necklaces were grabbed from people’s necks. There were no guards, no one in sight to help,” the angry commuter says.
Metrorail spokeswoman, Riana Scott, says an investigation is underway.
“We are concerned to hear about the incident and are investigating. Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident should report it to SAPS or Metrorail’s all hours reporting number 021 449 4336,” Scott said.
