The owner of a popular tavern, the Corner Lounge in Gugulethu, was shot dead on Friday near his home.
Nkululeko “Nkuja” Tuntubele, 45, had just returned from former Western Cape ANC secretary Songezo Mjongile’s funeral when he was killed.
His brother Bonisile Alam confirmed: “He was shot on Friday evening after returning from his friend’s funeral. Eish, it is bad.”
The businessman died on his way to hospital and Alam says they do not know the motive behind his killing.
In 2018, it was reported that Tuntubele was allegedly involved in the assassination of top criminal defence attorney Pete Mihalik.
It was alleged that he ordered the R1 million hit on the lawyer while he was in prison for robbery.
Tuntubele allegedly approached taxi boss Vuyile Maliti to hire the hitmen.
Mihalik was shot dead outside his kids’ school in Green Point.
Maliti, and the two alleged hitmen, Sizwe Biyela and Nkosinathi Khumalo, were arrested in connection with Mihalik’s killing.
They are on trial at the Cape High Court.
Their case was being investigated by Lieutenant-Colonel Charl Kinnear, who was shot dead on 18 September in Bishop Lavis.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Noloyiso Rwexana confirms: “Gugulethu SAPS are investigating a case of murder after a shooting incident that led to the death of a 45-year-old man at NY138.
“According to reports, the incident occurred Friday at about 4.30pm.
“The circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation with no arrests yet.”
