A bus commuter’s iPhone led police to the hide-out of skelms who robbed the Golden Arrow bus on Wednesday morning.
The bus from Mitchells Plain was en route to Bellville at 9am when five armed men pretending to be commuters started robbing mense.
A woman has described her experience on Facebook, saying: “(As) the bus reached the R300 upturn from Stock Road, one of the men ran to the driver, gun pointed him, telling him to stop the bus. (sic)”
She says it took the robbers between 10 to 15 minutes to rob everyone on board.
She says one of the skelms klapped her because she was crying and he wanted her to shut up.
“One of them warned that he was going to shoot, but one of the guys stopped him,” she writes.
She says after the men got off the driver rushed to the nearest police station.
She contacted Metro Police and says officers managed to retrieve the stolen goods after tracking her iPhone.
“They managed to track the location of my phone and ended up at a house [in Philippi] with the stolen goods of many other victims. They unfortunately didn’t find my cellphone, but managed to get my purse,” she added.
Golden Arrow spokesperson, Browen Dyke-Beyer, confirmed the robbery and says the company has asked the City of Cape Town for assistance.
“We’ve approached (Mayco Member for Safety and Security) JP Smith to see how the railway police model or something similar could potentially be applied to our services.”
