Less than 24 hours after a cop was murdered in Delft, another attempt on a cop’s life took place on Monday evening, but this time, the officer was too wakker for the suspect.
Just after 8pm, a constable from Philippi SAPS, en route to the police station, stopped at a red traffic light when a skurk approached his car.
Police spokesperson, Captain FC van Wyk, says the suspect fled into the Thabo Mbeki informal settlement after an exchange of fire and was still at large.
“A case of attempted murder is under investigation after a suspect fired shots at the member while he was waiting for the robots to change on Monday evening at Symphony Way, Crossroads near Thabo Mbeki.

“The member heard a vehicle that was behind him hooting and when he checked the mirror he saw a suspect walking fast towards his side. He then fired several shots through the window and the suspect did as well and thereafter ran into shacks.
“No one was injured, but the window was damaged,” Van Wyk said.
On Monday, Police Minister Bheki Cele visited the family of slain cop Songezo Construction Khetiwe in Browns Farm.
He was killed and two of his colleagues seriously injured on Sunday morning after a man opened fire on them while they were patrolling in Delft.
The suspect was arrested and Cele revealed he has been linked to crimes.
“He has some records, some withdrawn and been in our hands more than five times.
“It seems we’re dealing with a habitual criminal,” he says.
