A suspected leader of the Americans gang is one of two men who were taken into custody on Wednesday night after they were fingered as the shooters in a bloody gang attack.
The pair were picked up by police after witnesses came forward and pointed them out.
Four men, aged between 24 and 42, were shot and injured in that incident in the Kewtown blokke on 25 November.
Three of the victims have recovered well from their injuries, while a fourth, Brandon Peterson, is still critical in hospital.
His right arm was severed after multiple shots, and he is currently on life support.
Brandon and his three friends had been outside, between Blocks 7 and 8, when two gunman had pulled up and opened fire.
More than 30 shots were unloaded on the men, who did not return fire.
The shooters ran off after they had emptied their clips.
The injured men were treated on the scene by emergency medical services, while the police patrolled the area vigilantly for the next few days.
A witness to the incident told the Daily Voice that the area had been quiet for a while, but the moment the alleged Americans gang boss starts shooting people, the peace is shattered.
“I heard he was in jail. It’s very strange that he went and shot at these people himself,” says the woman.
“The fool mos does not do anything. Hy sit net hits uit. He is always making people ‘disappear’. That is how they roll.
“Poor Brandon is a nice guy. He does not deserve that.”
After speaking to several witnesses and collecting evidence over the past few weeks, police were finally able to track down the two shooters and take them into custody.
It has not yet been established if the shooting is linked to an ongoing war for territory or the drug trade in the Athlone area.
The two suspects are currently being held at the Athlone police station, but have yet to be charged.
