The Retreat library has reopened today amid concerns from the community that school laaities have no place to study during exams.
The library was closed two weeks ago by the City of Cape Town after skurke burgled and trashed the building, stealing computer equipment worth more than R60 000.
In the third break-in reported this year alone, staff got a skri k when they arrived at work on 4 November to find burglar bars removed, books thrown off shelves, electrical wires cut and computer equipment stolen.
Mayco member for Community Services, Zahid Badroodien, said the crafty skelms knew how to bypass the alarm system, broke the burglar bars and slipped through tiny windows to gain entry.
But Badroodien says residents have begged the municipality to open the doors again so children can have a safe place to study.
“It comes as a result of cries from the community to open the facility as children have not had a place where they can go and study during exams.
“We have secured the windows again and do plan to brick it up in the future.
“They will be operating with limited services, as they only have two working computers and no printer.
“Patrons will, however, be able to return their items and take out new ones. Students can use the resources and space for study purposes and SmartCape facilities will be available.
“Signage will be clearly displayed to indicate that printing facilities are temporarily not available.”
