A Khayelitsha woman has been killed in what her family believes is a homophobic attack.
Phelokazi Ndlwana, 23, was drinking at a shebeen when she was stabbed and killed in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Her murder comes two weeks after a gay man, Lonwabo Jack, was killed in Nyanga while celebrating his birthday.
Phelokazi was allegedly stabbed by a parolee she had beef with before he went to the mang in December.
He came out last month and the day Phelokazi was killed, he had reportedly started a fight with her.
Her sister Phumeza Ndlwana, 38, tells the Daily Voice that Phelokazi had previously fought with the suspect, Bongani Ngadleka, 42, over a woman.
“My sister, who was a lesbian, told me that the accused said she can’t have a girlfriend when he doesn’t, they had a physical fight and she beat him,” she says.
“He came with a knife and she overpowered him and ended up stabbing him.
“He went to jail for a few months and then he was out on parole.”
The sister says Phelokazi was stabbed in the chest.
“He attacked her while she was by the toilets at the shebeen,” she explains.
“If she had seen him, I know that she would still be alive, she could fight and she was a brave woman who stood up for herself.”
She says a friend came to tell them about the incident while the suspect fled.
Ngadleka was arrested on Monday and yesterday he appeared in the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court where he heard he would be going back to Pollsmoor because he had violated his parole conditions by not signing for four days.
The court also heard that he has nine other pending cases.
