A newlywed Mitchells Plain couple have died after their Wendy house was gutted in a fire.
Hugn Lindoor, 34, and his wife Monique Danster, 29, died around midnight on Tuesday in the Woodlands home.
Their neighbour Lisa Minaar says no one knows how the fire started.
“Monique came home from work around 11pm and then shortly after, the fire started,” she says.
“What is odd is that we didn’t hear them shout for help, it was just quiet.
“A neighbour tried to save them, but the flames were too big. Other residents were on top of their roofs with hosepipes trying to put it out but that didn’t work.”
It took about an hour for the firefighters to put the fire out completely.
Lisa tells the Daily Voice: “Their bodies were found under the rubble.
“Hugn was on top of his wife, it looked like he was trying to protect her.
“It is very heartbreaking what happened to them.
“They just got married two weeks ago and they each have a daughter, it is by the grace of God that Hugn’s daughter was not at home at the time this took place because she lived there with them.”
City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue spokesman Jermaine Carelse confirmed the incident.
“A man and a woman died and two homes were destroyed in an early morning fire in Woodlands, Mitchells Plain, on Wednesday.
“The City’s Fire and Rescue Service received the emergency call at 12.26am about a fire in Sandbury Road.
“When firefighters arrived, they found informal structures on fire but managed to contain and extinguish the blaze by 1.42am.
“Two Wendy houses were destroyed and a motor vehicle damaged in the fire.
“The bodies of the man and woman were found in one of the structures.”
In another incident also yesterday, a Bishop Lavis mother, 52, died in a fire at her home while her 12-year-old son is now recovering in hospital.
Subcouncil 5 chairperson Angus McKenzie says the devastating fire happened in Reenberg Road.
“It has claimed the life of a mother of four, the circumstances around the fire are unknown at this time,” he says.
Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk says inquest dockets have been opened for investigation.
