An abandoned dog, that gave birth in a stormwater drain in Elsies River, has been rescued after residents heard her cries for help and called the Cape of Goodhope SPCA.
On Tuesday afternoon, inspectors arrived at the open veldjie and extracted the small brown crossbreed who has now been named Nina after she gave birth to nine healthy puppies in the drain.
Belinda Abraham from the SPCA says the heavily pregnant dog made the best out of a bad situation after being abandoned and found a drain to birth her pups.
“So Nina was dumped on an open field in Elsies River and abandoned by those she had only loved all her life,” says Abraham.
“She must’ve been so confused and scared and in her desperation to find a warm, sheltered place to give birth, she had forced her way into an impossible situation.
“She had safely delivered her nine puppies, but she was trapped and couldn’t find a way out.
“Thank goodness her cries were heard from under the ground.”
Abraham says inspectors responded immediately.
“She has been well fed and she is producing good quality milk for her pups, but this could have ended very badly.”
“Pet abandonment is not only unnecessary because the SPCA will never turn any animal away, it is also criminal.”
Abraham says the mom and her puppies will soon be up for adoption.
