The City of Cape Town’s Law Enforcement has confirmed they fined a Delft father R1500 because his son was playing outside in the street in contravention of lockdown restrictions.
Last week, the Daily Voice reported that Justin Alfred, 24 of Voorbrug in Delft was fined while standing in his driveway.
Justin explained that he had been called to the front of the property by his sister who told him that Law Enforcement officers were looking for him.
Justin said his six-year-old son had been playing in the street after he warned the little boy to adhere to lockdown regulations.
The angry father showed the Daily Voice the fine, which states: “Failed to remain confined to his residence during lockdown period”.
Justin, who is a painter and has been out of work due to the lockdown, says he is unable to pay the penalty.
But Inspector Wayne Dyason of the City’s Law Enforcement says the man was fined because his son is a minor: “The fine was issued after a group of children was found running around in the road in defiance of the lockdown regulations.
“They refused to listen and one was seen running into the house where the complainant lives.
“The officers went to the house and got hold of the father and explained to him the seriousness of the situation we are in and that his child was breaking the law.
“The child is a minor and it was explained that he as the parent would have to take the fine as we cannot charge a minor.
“So it is true he was inside the property, but he is not giving the full story.”
