Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato has announced plans to close various municipal facilities to contain the spread of the
Coronavirus.
He says from today, facilities including swimming pools, camping sites, stadiums, spray parks, sports fields, nature reserves, resorts and other facilities will be closed.
“Visits by the City’s Mobile Office have been suspended until further notice,” he said.
“Library operating hours (including mobile services) will be reduced incrementally and these facilities will provide only basic services, namely, taking out and returning reading material.
“The number of persons allowed into the library will be controlled.”
He says cemeteries will remain open but Capetonians are advised when making bookings to be mindful of the number of persons at the graveside during burial.
Offices that provide City services like Driving Licence Testing Centres and housing and planning offices will remain open for now.
With regards to the former, he says: “All eye testing equipment is sanitised after each user.
“Staff have been issued hand sanitiser, and gloves and masks are in order.
“The number of occupants have been limited as per the queueing system”
For account payments, residents are encouraged to use the online services or ATMs.
The City is also withdrawing permits for previously approved events.
The City’s Events Permit Office will also not process any applications until the national disaster is lifted.
This also means the City will not be providing any of its services for any events.
The City will be engaging with the sector to ensure that the financial and logistical support for the events is not withdrawn and is again made available when the events resume once the virus outbreak has been brought under control.
