Religious leaders in Manenberg are appealing for donations to keep a community project aimed at uplifting the area going.
After hosting weekly mass thikrs, attended by more than 500 people for nine months, Moulana Sameeg Norodien and Sheikh Salieg Isaacs say they need help with sound equipment and food.
In June last year the duo took to the streets and hosted open prayer sessions in gang hotspots.
On Eid along with police they shut down Manenberg Avenue for a prayer session.
“We started out small and each week it has grown bigger and bigger. Now we have an average of 500 people every Thursday who come out for the mass thikr.

“Afterwards both Muslims and Christians have a meal together and we make pots and pots of soup, akhni or breyani depending on what donations we get,” says Norodien.
“Every week we have to go around and ask for donations to make the food.
“We also have to pay for the sound system so we are calling on sponsors to come forward and help us keep this going.
“If bad people can use our public spaces for bad deeds then we can take these spaces back through prayer.”
The next mass thikr will be held in Red River Walk on Thursday night at 7pm.
