The men arrested at a Sea Point hotel for the weekend massacre in Khayelitsha appeared in court yesterday.
But only three have been charged with one count of murder so far.
National Prosecution Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila says Andile Valishiya, Dominic Isaacs and Fundile Maseti appeared at Khayelitsha Magistrates’ Court.
“They are charged with one count of murder. This follows shootings that took place over the weekend in Khayelitsha. Their case has been postponed to 2 June for bail application,” he says.
The accused were nabbed on Monday morning less than 24 hours after 13 people were killed, while five others were critically injured in Site B on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa says: “The body of the first victim was found in Banzi Street, Site B. In the RR Section, three other males were shot dead, two Somali nationals were shot at T110.
“Meanwhile, at a spaza shop in Y-Block two other men were killed after being shot, reports also indicate two other Somali nationals were shot close to a spaza shop in the area, three more died in hospital.”
Acting provincial police commissioner Major-General Thembisile Patekile says: “What is interesting for us is the fact that we arrested them in a hotel, they were not in Khayelitsha, they went to book themselves in a hotel.”
“That is something that boggles our minds, but we are working around the clock with detectives.
“The questioning will help determine what happened and some of them might be released.”
