The Tafelsig East Sub Forum hosted a Fun Day for the laaities in their community on Sunday.
Anwar Alexander, the Project Coordinator, said the event was aimed at breaking chains in their community.
“This area is known for gangsterism, crime and drugs and we want to break that stigma, we want to break the chains of children carrying hurt and anger on from generational curses,” says Anwar.
“This spot, the park at the corner of Pakhuis and Piketberg Street, is specifically known as the stone throwing area. Child gangs from one side of the road are at war with kids on the other side by stone throwing.
“We hosted this event here in order to bring those kids together for a day of innocent fun and games, where they can just be children and enjoy themselves.”
Members of the YMCA Cape Flats and Y-ise Up Museum also shared their stories of surviving gangsterism and drug abuse.
Rapper Michael Palmer, from Bruin Child Media performed a song as the kids jolled while listening to his encouraging lyrics.
“Die is vir die youth, they need enrichment and stories to be told with enthusiasm, they need to see examples and products of recovery and also what will happen if they take the wrong path.”
Nearly 200 kids were given lekker hot dog, a party packet and fruit.
The Tafelsig Drill Squad, made up of the Tafelsig East community kids, showed off their marching skills and various fun activities to keep the kids entertained.
Ward 82 Councilor Washiela Harris said the initiative by the Sub Forum was needed.
“These kids need these forms of intervention, this comes as a relief and I am so glad to be part of the event and witness these changes taking place in our community .”
