A police officer stationed at Lansdowne SAPS is set to appear in court today after he was arrested for his wife’s murder.
Sergeant Zamekile Nyolobe, 36, allegedly stabbed his wife Thandiwe Ndiko, 35, in a drunken argument.
A neighbour says on Wednesday night the couple and friends were having a lekker jol.
The following morning when she was on her way to work, she saw police vans outside their Mfuleni home.
“They were singing gospel songs, having fun, I didn’t join them as I had to be at work in the morning,” she says.
“When I was leaving just before 6am on Thursday, I saw a lot of vans including the mortuary vehicle.
“I asked what was going on and I was told that Zamekile had killed his wife during a fight.”
The 32-year-old woman says her neighbours would fight whenever they drank.
“We always knew that when they drank they would end up fighting, but it never got to the point where they would hurt each other.
“And the other thing about Zamekile is that he would offend you and forget the next day.
“He apparently tried to wake his wife up when the police were knocking. He must have forgotten he killed her.”
The neighbour says Sergeant Nyolobe’s family later came to collect all his belongings from the home he shared with his wife and three-year-old child.
“They took everything but the dog and their son is with his family,” she explains.
“His immediate neighbours wanted to do a vigil but there hasn’t been anyone there for days since the incident.”
A police source says Thandiwe had cuts on her legs and a swollen face.
“A panga was found on the scene and the accused had been cut and his clothes were full of blood.”
Police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut says Mfuleni Police arrested an off-duty cop stationed at Lansdowne SAPS on Thursday on a charge of murder.
“SAPS were summoned to a residence in Bardale Mfuleni at around 1.30am where the body of the sergeant’s 35-year-old wife was discovered.
“It is believed she was stabbed during a domestic dispute.
“The 36-year-old suspect is expected to make an appearance in Blue Downs’ Magistrates’ Court this morning.”
