Meet Cape Town’s very own Michael Bublé.
The 16-year-old Joshua Daniels, from Delft, says he’s a huge fan of the Canadian crooner and can sing exactly like his idol.
Joshua looks like any other Cape Flats laaitie, until he gets behind a mic and belts out classic hits with his rich, smooth vocals.
The Daily Voice discovered Joshua after he performed at a Christmas concert in Mitchells Plain on Sunday.
When we visited his Delft home, Joshua put on a kwaai show in his living room, serenading us with Frank Sinatra’s Fly Me to the Moon, as well as Prince’s Purple Rain.
His musical influences include Nat King Cole and Marvin Gaye.
The soft-spoken Belhar High School teen says he has a passion for singing and has big dreams of performing on the big stage.
“When I’m done with school, I want to study music because I love performing and making music,” he says.
“I love old school music because of the textures of the artist.”
Josh is not just an old soul on the inside but also on the outside, his wardrobe consists of vintage clothing including long, slim-cut coats and blazers with shirts.
Mom Magdalene Daniels, 52, says she is impressed by her son’s talent.
“When people hear him sing, they always cry,” she says proudly.
“Josh is a special boy because he grew up in a house of musicians but is the only one who loves old school.”
The dressmaker and mom of three says her youngest son is a gem because of his interest in the arts.
“We can’t bar him from genres or where he will perform one day, we can’t be selfish and keep his talent to ourselves.
“If he is meant to travel or perform on big stages, then so be it.”
When he isn’t singing, he stays after school every day to study drama.
“I love acting and studying drama encourages me to be a good performer on stage one day,” says Joshua.
And he says he is proud of where he comes from.
“People shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, it’s not about where you come from but where you’re heading to,” he says.
“Delft has lots of talent , it just needs to be discovered.”
