The City of Cape Town is giving the Kaapse Klopse just under R6 million for this
season’s festivities.
The overall value of the funding for various events and competitions was approved by the City’s Special Events Committee, it announced on Monday.
The City has approved the disbursement of the R4.572 million in cash funding to support the upcoming minstrel events.
Additional support of R1.3 million for City services and the waiver of costs for City-owned venues will form part of the package of support for the associations.
The contribution to minstrel events for the City’s 2019/20 financial year will thus total R5.872 million.
The funding will support six associations to host events, including Tweede Nuwe Jaar, other minstrel competitions and the Malay choir competitions.

The Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association which runs the Cape Town Street Parade has been allocated a total of R3.2 million, of which R2.4 million will be in cash and R800 000 will go towards venues and City services.
The KKKA is also
receiving R422 000 for its own
competitions.
The Cape Malay Choir Board is getting R1.1 million (R700 000 in cash) for their road march and an additional R300 000 for its competitions.
The SA United Christmas Bands Board is getting R250 000 (R100 000 cash) for its road march and R200 000 for its
competitions.
The Cape District Minstrel Board and Keep the Dream both get R200 000 for their
competitions.

Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, says the City took into account the Constitution, the Municipal Finance Management Act, and other considerations when it reviewed the applications for funding.
