It was a day to remember for one of two Cape Idols SA contestants on Sunday.
In the first of a two-part episode, Bothasig mom of four Berenike Rae Trytsman aka Berry, 31, won over the judges with her soulful voice as she made the Top 16 cut.
Harregat judge Randall Abrahams says: “The final audition was tough on the contestants and we had to eliminate some very good singers.
“Their only downfall was buckling under the pressure of the competition.
“Selecting the Top 16 was a brutal affair, but we have selected an exceptional group of singers and they have set a high standard for themselves.”
Berry impressed the judges with her rendition of Neverland by Zendaya, and says: “I am completely overwhelmed and excited.
“The talent this year is insane and I feel so privileged to have made it.
“I've been working so hard all my life on my vocals, and I was starting to wonder if I'd ever make it anywhere.
“Now here I am! I can’t wait to work hard for the votes and continue to prove to everyone that I can do more than what they think I can do.”
The 31-year-old says this was her last chance to enter Idols due to her age.
“This is my last chance on Idols since I was 30 when I entered.
“At a certain age you start thinking, can I still do this?
“I wanted to prove to myself that I can and set a good example for my kids.”
Berry dreams of buying a bigger home for her hubby and kids if she wins the R1 million prize.
“I actually lost my job for a year when Covid hit in March 2020 and we relied on the kindness of others and God to bring us through,” she says.
“So if I win, I will make sure that everyone who helped us gets something back to say thank you.
“I would also love a house with more rooms for all our kids who right now share a room.”
