Cape Town has delivered some of the most successful Idols over the years but with only two contenders in the Top 30 this year, every vote counts.
Season 17 is under way and following a gruelling first day of Theatre Week, Cape Town managed to secure two spots in the Top 30.
Hanover Park’s golden boy Daylin Sass, 23, and Berenike Rae Trytsman aka Berry, 31, from Bothasig will represent Kaapstad in the coming weeks as the competition progresses.
During the most brutal day in Theatre Week history, a massive 66 contestants were sent packing on day one as the judges sought the cream of the crop.
The open auditions had seen more than 100 Idols hopefuls make it to Theatre Week, but their jubilation was short-lived as the pressure took its toll.
Judges Randall Abrahams, Somizi Mhlongo and Unathi Nkayi made it clear that lukewarm and half-hearted performances were not going to be tolerated.
Berry was the star of the show in her first group round and says: “Theatre Week group rounds were an absolute dream, my team was amazing.
“We got along from the start and didn't argue about a single thing.”
The team performed Don't Let Go by En Vogue.
“I didn't know the song when I first drew the name but when we listened, it started coming back to me.
“That being said, it was a challenge to learn the lyrics and really feel the song.
“It's not a song I would've chosen for myself but I did enjoy singing it.”
Daylin’s group landed him a spot in the next round after they performed Wifey by Next.
“It is such a fun song, I never thought I’d be able to pull it off,” says Daylin, whose powerful performance of Adele’s Hello is what got him to group rounds.
By day three, 30 contestants survived the group rounds and now they have one last chance to prove to the judges that they have what it takes to make it to the top 16.
