On Monday, South Africans will celebrate Heritage Day.
It’s a day to celebrate all things truly and uniquely South African, from our diverse culture, beliefs, traditions and of course food.
The day is also known as National Braai Day and with this being a long weekend, I suspect the braai tongs and coals will be out long before Monday.
It’s often said South Africa is a melting pot of cultures and it’s true, we’re like a human version of a potjiekos!
Must be why we love it so much.
A medley of different flavours brought together in a cast iron pot and together it becomes the most delicious, colourful dish that the whole family can enjoy.
While the potjiekos method may differ from person to person, the potjie remains a favourite because of its versatility.
And what’s a braai without the staples - vleis, wors and a salad.
Curry noodle salad has become my new favourite, it’s easy to make, adds a touch of colour and it simply tastes great!
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like a braai, but for those who don’t ( ek weetie wie julle is nie) there are other local alternatives for you to enjoy - think chicken bredie, a traditional Cape Malay Curry or bobotie.
This selection of recipes are sure to add lots of lekker local flavour to your table this Braai Day.
Here’s to keeping the heritage alive and here’s to lekker braai!
