Tomorrow’s Currie Cup semi-final clash between Western Province and the Sharks might be the last match ever at Newlands.
With the union moving to Cape Town Stadium this year, Province will know before their 4.30pm kickoff if they have a shot at returning to stadium next week.
If the Golden Lions manage to beat the Blue Bulls in the 2pm semifinal at Loftus, victory for WP over the Sharks will mean that they will host next week’s final.
As it stands, though, this will be the final encounter at the home of Cape rugby, with WP captain Siya Kolisi saying of the occasion: “It’s great that we were able to get a playoff here at Newlands. Obviously we would have liked to finish top of the log and hopefully win our semifinal and actually play a final here at Newlands.
“But the most important thing is the game here in front of us – we’ve got to do what we’ve got to do. We don’t know what is going to happen in the other semifinal.”
He adds: “We are the group that’s chosen to close the chapter at Newlands and that’s a huge honour already for us.
“It’s something that we have spoken about – whatever happens, we’re going to be the team that plays the last game at Newlands and we want to make sure that we are remembered for something good.”
