Rikus Pretorius says he is not just a “stampkar” centre, he combines his big frame with some flair and trickery as well.
The 21 -year-old Stormer stands 1.92m in his socks and is billed as weighing over 100kg, making for a typical South African strongman at inside centre.
SA rugby has historically preferred big inside centres that take the ball up in the midfield and provide that physical presence on defence as well.
Pretorius fits that bill.
But he warns that there is more to him than meets the eye.
The youngster explains of his approach to the game: “I will play the way the coach expects me to play. With that, I will use my skills as well.
“I will use my feet and offloads to get the ball away.
"I wouldn’t want to be just a stampkar, I want to add some skill to it.”
The Stormers welcome the Cheetahs to Newlands on Saturday, with their visitors still sweating on the fitness of another former Grey College grootseun in the midfield, Frans Steyn.
Pretorius hopes Steyn makes it to the Mother City to line up against him.
He says of Steyn: “To play against him will be a big challenge.
"But those are the games you want to play if you want to become a Springboks.
“He was also in Grey College… so it’s a player that I looked up to when growing up.”
Stormers coach John Dobson will name his side for Saturday clash today.
