Cape Cobras wicketkeeper/ batsman Kyle Verreynne is slowly but surely forcing his way into the national team’s starting XI, according to coach Ashwell Prince.
On the fringes of the national side, the 23-year-old once again put up his hand last week in the Cobras’ 4-Day Cup draw against the Warriors at Newlands, scoring an incredible career-high of 216 runs not out.
And with only three ODIs to his name, Prince believes die mannetjie is on the verge of a big breakthrough in the national team.
As the Cobras gear up to play their final four-day clash of the season against the Knights at Newlands tomorrow, Prince says: “He [Verreynne] has been an immensely talented player in the domestic setup for a few years now.
“He’s been knocking at the door, he’s had a taste of international cricket and definitely not looked out of place.
“If you want to add a bit of context, he’s been touring with the Proteas and not had much game time throughout the season, he was our best batsman before he left – he’s one of the best batsman around the country and he’s only 23 years old.
“So to come back in his first first-class game since touring Pakistan and locally being in the squad against Sri Lanka and not being able to get game time -–understandably – to put in a performance like that shows what kind of quality he’s got.
“He’s a calm guy, he’s got a good head on his shoulders and the future is bright for him.”
