IN TROUBLE: Barca and Real

Uefa on Tuesday night started proceedings to ban Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus from European competition, with the giants facing two years in the wilderness.

The three clubs are the laaste manne standing of 12 European Super League founding members, who last month announced a breakaway competition to rival Uefa’s Champions League.

But the plan collapsed in a show of player and fan power.

Uefa, in a brief statement, said: “Following an investigation conducted by Uefa Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors in connection with the so-called ‘Super League’ project, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona and Juventus FC for a potential violation of Uefa’s legal framework.”

Among the range of punishments facing the clubs, the most severe are “exclusion from current and/or future competitions”, as well as “banning from all football-related activities” for the directors.
