Stormers wing Sergeal Petersen has been ruled out of Friday’s Super Rugby Unlocked clash against the Pumas in Nelspruit.
Petersen told coach John Dobson that he “felt his quadricep go” in last weekend’s 23-17 win over the Lions in their Super Rugby Unlocked opener at Newlands.
The 26-year-old is expected to be sidelined for a lengthy period of time, with fellow wing Seabelo Senatla also still out because of a hamstring injury.
Their injuries have opened the door for a new star to step up and Stormers forwards coach Rito Hlungwane admits they are yet to decide who it will be.
South Africa Sevens flyer and 21-year-old Angelo Davids, who has scored back-to-back hattricks for the WP U21 team in their last two matches, is the one contender, with Edwill van der Merwe, 24, being the other.
Hlungwane says of their options out wide ahead of tomorrow's team announcement: “Seabelo [Senatla] is close to a return, but he won’t be ready for the game.
“We’ve got really good depth there [on the wing], Edwill is around and if you’ve watched the U21 games, Angelo Davids – you saw on Saturday how we played.
“We’ve got good options to play around with and should be able to finalise the team tomorrow morning [today].”
Meanwhile, World Player of the Year and Stormers flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit remains sidelined because of a leg injury.
