Super Rugby in Japan is now officially wolwekos, after Rugby Australia yesterday confirmed that the Sunwolves will not be playing in Oz’s domestic tournament.
With the rugby gearing up to return from coronavirus lockdown, the Sunwolves were in talks to join Australia’s four teams and Perth-based side Western Force in a tournament.
This season was always going to be the last for the Sunwolves, but without a proper farewell match Japan Rugby Football Union Chairman Shigetaka Mori says their legacy can never be taken away from the team.
Mori explains: “The Sunwolves, loved by many fans, have reached the end of the 2020 season.
“The five-year trajectory of
Sunwolves will never disappear.
“When the Japan national team’s success in the Rugby World Cup last year was talked about, it proved to many fans that the existence of the Sunwolves was a key factor behind this.”
