The number 13 is lucky for some but unlucky for others. In the case of Manchester United interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer it is the latter.
Having been undefeated in 12 games (10 wins and two draws) in the league since taking over from Jose Mourinho in December, Solskjaer’s run was brought to an end by a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in his 13th league match in charge of the team on Sunday.
And he says it was his worst moment as Red Devils boss to date.
Of the defeat, Solskjaer says: “It has been fantastic so far but [this defeat] is the lowest we have been because we lost and missed the chance to put pressure on Spurs [in third place on the log].
“We have won games we have not deserved to win and we lost a game we did not deserve to lose.”
Granit Xhaka opened the scoring for Arsenal with a long-range effort in the 12th minute.
United then pushed hard for an equaliser but conceded a soft penalty when Alexandre Lacazette was fouled by Fred in the box in the 69th minute.
Of the decision to award the penalty, Solskjaer says: “I don’t think it is a penalty, that is a decision the ref had to make but Jon Moss might be disappointed when he sees it again.
“I don’t think there’s enough contact there to warrant a penalty.”
When asked whether Lacazette dived, the United boss adds: “No, I don’t think so. Apparently, Fred is very, very strong.”
Despite the defeat, Solskjaer remains hopeful of a top-four finish.
He says: “It’s very tight. I don’t think nerves come into it yet, but you see Spurs lose, we lose, Chelsea drew, so it’s going to go down to the wire - down to the last few games definitely - but we’ve given ourselves a great chance to be in the fight. We are in a good position.”
