Tottenham Hotspur held on to beat Newcastle United 2-1
in the Premier League opener for both teams on Saturday.
Jan Vertonghen and Dele Alli sandwiched goals around one from
Newcastle's Joselu, all from headers, in the opening 18 minutes at St
James' Park.
Vertonghen scored off the underside of the crossbar and Joselu
equalized from Matt Ritchie's cross.
Alli then nodded home Serge Aurier's perfectly placed ball to the
back post for the winner.
Newcastle's Mohamed Diame and Salomon Rondon both hit the woodwork in
the second half, with Ben Davies denied from point-blank range by
Martin Dubravka at the other end.
Chelsea visit Huddersfield Town, Bournemouth host Cardiff City,
Fulham face Crystal Palace, Watford take on Brighton and Hove Albion
and Everton are at Wolverhampton Wanderers in Saturday's five other
matches.
