The South African Football Association (Safa) is set to consult with the SA government before they can consider bidding for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
Safa president Danny Jordaan, on Sunday at Safa’s AGM, confirmed that the Confederation of African Football (Caf) had asked the association to “seriously consider” bidding for the tournament after Caf stripped Cameroon of the hosting rights on Friday due to the delays in their preparations for the African showpiece in June.
Safa tweeted: “Safa President has told the Safa AGM in Sandton on Sunday, 2 December that Caf has asked the Association to seriously consider hosting Afcon 2019.
“Safa will, however, meet the Government first before making a decision.”
South Africa has successfully hosted two Afcon before in 1996 when Bafana Bafana won their only title, and 2013.
Mzansi also became the first country in Africa to hosts the World Cup back in 2010.
It has emerged that South Africa is set to compete with Morocco about hosting the Afcon.
Morocco has hosted Afcon once in their history. That was back in 1988.
With one round of qualifiers still remaining for Afcon, South Africa are yet to book qualification while Uganda, Madagascar, Senegal, Morocco, Mali, Nigeria, Algeria, Guinea, Mauritania, Tunisia, Egypt and Ivory Coast have secured their berths.
